College students are notorious for being stressed, which is why relaxing is an important skill for students to learn during school. Creating a comfortable study and sleep environment is the first step to reducing anxieties.

Everyone is different, so what may work for some may not work for all, but here are some tips to help form the perfect getaway at the end of the day.

  1. Keep items in your home that “spark joy.” This tip is the main focus of the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. While this is difficult to achieve, this tip can serve as a springboard in creating an ideal space.
  2. Surround yourself with colors that make you happy. Whether it be serene blues and greens or vibrant oranges, fill your space with your favorite hues. This can be achieved through blankets, furniture and wall décor.
  3. Invest in some decent bedding. Coming home from a long day to a nicely made bed adorned with fluffy pillows and blankets is the ultimate reward for making it through another day of school.
  4. Customize your space with the items that are important to you. Items can include photos, memorabilia, gifts, or anything that puts a smile on your face.
  5. Use pleasant smells to make the space more inviting. Consider candles, plug-ins, or an oil diffuser to bring freshness into your space. Lavender relaxes while peppermint or lemongrass aids with focus.
  6. Have a place for everything. If an organized space helps clear your mind, a major rule to live by is to have a place for everything. Disorder arises from lack of time and lack of space; designate areas for your belongings and keeping a clear desk will be a breeze.
  7. Have a routine. Routines ease anxiety. Making your bed in the morning prepares you for the day, and putting belongings away as soon as you return clears space to begin studying. It also eliminates the urge to clean in order to put off homework.

A comfortable and clean environment leads to better studying and a low-stress environment; the ideal for any busy student.
