Graduation is approaching fast, and many students will move on with their lives, finding their place in large companies or impressive careers. Students will search for a career they are passionate about, something they will be able to wake up for every day and be excited to go to work. As people say, “You’ll never work a day in your life if you have a job you love.”
These students had to start somewhere. As college students, we find it challenging at times to find that balance between work and school. Some students don’t even have time to work during their college years, but many find time to help pay their rent. Some students have the opportunity to have great jobs in college, something we all strive to find.
Austin Campbell, a senior majoring in computer information systems, had an amazing experience during his time working for the mastermind of all companies, Apple.
“It was probably the best job I could have as a college student,” Campbell said. “I learned a lot about business more than technology just because I already knew about the technology. It was a great experience.”
Working in customer service, Campbell spent his time answering the many questions Apple users encounter. He also got to go through Apple’s rigorous training program to give him added experience in the technology field.
Lucy Skrobacz, a junior majoring in journalism and media communication, has had many jobs during her college career. From passing out the campus newspaper every day to working in the retail and food industries, Skrobacz continues to build up her resume with an impressive workload.
“My favorite part of being on the [Collegian] Street Team is that I get to say ‘have a great day’ to so many great people,” Skrobacz said. “I know it’s a small gesture but I hope it actually impacts people.”
Not many people in the food industry can say they love showing up to work everyday. It can be an overwhelming job, whether it be waitressing, hosting or cooking. Skrobacz finds a great balance with her job at Ben & Jerry’s.
“I love working at Ben & Jerry’s because customers are always happy,” Skrobacz said. “Who isn’t happy when they’re getting ice cream? As staff, we all have so much fun working together that work doesn’t feel like work.”
Gabrielle Smith, a sophomore majoring in psychology, found herself working at Studio Be Salon. Time management is key when working many hours during your college career.
“I would say as far as Studio Be, it could definitely be stressful when my hours were more than I was comfortable with or I had a lot going on in school, but overall, it has been a great experience,” Smith said. “It’s a little hard because all of my coworkers are older than me but that kind of adds to the experience too. Managing my time pretty much meant doing my homework after I got off at 10 p.m.”
Working in college is an impressive addition to your resume. Many employers look for students who are able to manage their time efficiently and get an education while also gaining experience in a work environment.
Internships are also crucial to a successful resume during a college career. As many students move on after graduation to bigger and better careers, there is always room for younger students to begin applying for that next chapter in life. Work in college can be challenging but well worth the time spent investing in yourself.
